Information

Jeon-Ju is a city in South Korea and the capital of North Jeolla Province. It is both urban and rural due to the closeness of Wanju County which almost entirely surrounds Jeonju. (Wanju County has many residents who work in Jeonju.) The name Jeonju literally means "Perfect Region" (from the hanja 全 (전; jeon) for perfect, 州 (주; ju) for region). It is an important tourist center famous for Korean food, historic buildings, sports activities, and innovative festivals.

In May 2012, Jeonju was chosen as a Creative Cities for Gastronomy as part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. This honor recognizes the city's traditional home cooking handed down over thousands of years, its active public and private food research, a system of nurturing talented chefs, and its hosting of distinctive food festivals

  2. info_photo_678_3.JPG Hanok Village was on the Jeonju River-side outside West Gate which is near present-day Daga-dong. The area was where Japanese people who flooded into Jeonju after the Eulsa Treaty (1905) mainly resided. Areas outside the West Gate were mostly inhabited by lower-class people or merchants. There were clear distinctions between classes at that time and the City wall served as the dividing line. For several years after 1930 Koreans started to build Hanok Village throughout the PungNam-dong and Gyo-dong area mainly as a reaction to the continued expansion of Japanese influence. This was partially a response against Japanese-style houses and partially an expression of national pride. Hanok areas in Gyo-dong and PungNam-dong built in the 1930's showed clear contrast with the Japanese style and displayed some odd city color as they included Western style missionary houses schools and churches nearby. Looking over from Omokdae the Hanok Village in Gyo-dong and Pungnam-dong shows majestic ridges of octagonal roofs with beautiful round lines and shapes.
  3. 비빔밥.jpg Bibimbap (Korean pronunciation: [bibimbap], sometimes anglicized bi bim bap or bi bim bop) is a signature Korean dish. The word literally means ""mixed rice"". Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables) and gochujang (chili pepper paste), soy sauce, or doenjang, a salty soybean paste. A raw or fried egg and sliced meat (usually beef) are common additions. The hot dish is stirred together thoroughly just before eating. In South Korea, Jeonju, Jinju, and Tongyeong are especially famous for their versions of bibimbap. In 2011, it was listed at number 40 on the Worlds 50 most delicious foods readers poll compiled by CNN Travel
  4. info_photo_1440_3.jpg The museum’s collection currently consists of more than 30,000 cultural heritage items, including archaeological relics excavated in Jeollabuk-do, numerous books and manuscripts, and valuable works of pottery, calligraphy, and painting. At any given time, around 1,400 of these items are exhibited in the museum’s five exhibition halls and its Outdoor Exhibition area. The museum also regularly organizes and hosts special exhibitions on various themes, to enhance our visitors’ understanding and appreciation of the historical and cultural heritage of Jeollabuk-do.
